Conference: Women and Constitutional Amendments
The 7th Conference of National Women Council on Constitutional Amendments took place in March 2007 in Cairo and focused on women’s economic participation, education, gender discrimination, and health as issues vital to women’s actual needs.
The conference coincides with the implementation of important political reforms and it is therefore important to discuss women participation, the principle of citizenship, promotion of democratic values, refinement of upgrade mechanisms through which rights are exercised and ensuring that women have key role in parliament. The proposed constitutional amendments are expected to give women more opportunities to be elected to parliament as confirmed by President Hosni Mubark in his election campaign, which shed light on women’s political empowerment through a quota system. The National Council capitalized on this momentum and organized five training session for women to enhance their performance as parliamentarians. In addition, it facilitated women’s access to identity and voting cards and influenced the establishment of family courts, the equitable transfer of citizenship and the creation of an alimony fund.
