Arab Women in Local Governance
A regional project in Algeria, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen that aims to:
Increase
women's participation in local governance as leaders, voters,
candidates and active contributors to the resolution of local issues.
Create
a space for dialogue among NGOs, advocacy institutions and women
leaders concerning the development of the local community.
Highlight
key issues such as gender equality and translate the demands of the
local community into realities at the national level.
The project empolyed methods are:
Document previously effective strategies to use as advocacy tools.
Conduct media campaigns to ensure coverage of project activities and to systematically advocate women's role on a larger scale.
Encourage dialgoue through a series of national and regional workshops.
Share
expeiences and developments throuch electronic exchange of information
to keep activists abreast of advances and setbacks in relation to
women's role in local governance.
Create a regional
network on women and local governance to monitor and report on
developments in relation to women's role in local governance.
The major motivations for the project are:
define the regional perception of local governance as new concept and its relevance to women's leadership.
contribute
to voice building process through fostering direct dialgoue between
women leaders, NGOs and active players at local level.
maintain the culture of use of successful experiences and best
practices in measuring advances and adovacy of women participation in
local governance. capture key developments in fovaor of women voting and candidacy rights as opportunities for change region wide.
